I met Carly early in my time at Triune. She was calm and polite and didn't ask for anything, but rather seemed content to come to the church to eat and rest. She lived beside the dumpsters at the TD Center in order to stay away from the drugs and dangers on the streets closer to downtown. She lived there, in fact, for 18 months, managing to keep herself clean enough to attend classes at Greenville Tech, way on down South Pleasantburg Drive. Carly became one of our guinea pigs when we launched Triune Circles, our year-long relational ministry designed to lift people out of poverty or homelessness. We encircled Carly with four trained community volunteers who came alongside to sharpen her strengths, shore up her weaknesses, celebrate her gifts, nudge her into healthy behaviors. During that year, she worked with Greenville Mental Health to get into a little house with a big picture window. On her birthday, her four Circle supporters showed up with a cake, balloons and a pink dogwood tree. "Pastor Deb," she told me later, "those people had to know me so well, love me so well, to know that that dogwood tree was the best gift they could give me." Not exactly, I remember thinking. Having those four friends was probably the best gift.

This month, we welcome our new associate pastor, the Rev. Tandy Taylor. Tandy is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and a graduate of Davidson College and Princeton Theological Seminary. I met her years ago when I was doing a story for The Greenville News on how we hear God's call. I remember being impressed with her obedience and her ministry then, and was thrilled when she and her husband, David, began worshiping with us at Triune last year. Tandy and David have co-pastored churches for 23 years, most recently as founding pastors of Eastminster Presbyterian in Simpsonville. At Triune, Tandy will serve part time as our minister of Christian education and pastoral care. We hope you will visit Triune and meet her.
